Oncopolicy Forum 2012: Shaping the Landscape of Oncology

Oncopolicy Forum 2012
On 11 October, more than one hundred leaders in European cancer policy gathered to discuss the future of personalised cancer medicine at the Bibliothèque Solvay, Brussels, at the fourth Oncopolicy Forum organised by ECCO – the European CanCer Organisation.  Distinguished speakers from the EU institutions, patient groups, and academia called for a raft of measures to ensure that personalised cancer medicine is able to deliver on its promises to patients.  Unprecedented levels of cooperation, both within and outside oncology, will be needed to tackle the scientific, ethical, financial, and practical challenges of personalised medicine delegates heard.

The significance of personalised medicine is undeniable. However, many hurdles must be overcome to enable rapid development and implementation of its results. The programme tackled contentious issues such as defining the concept and state-of-the-art; developing common standards in ‘omics’ technology, including bioinformatics, system biology, imaging and infrastructures; faster uptake in clinical practice; regulatory and economic issues; and educating patients as partners in personalised medicine. The lively brainstorming sessions on practical steps that could be taken to resolve them showed just how important these issues are to all concerned.

“Policy makers have a crucial role to play in addressing today’s challenges in oncology and personalised cancer medicine.  We need a paradigm shift in healthcare organisation and delivery, requiring new and innovative multidisciplinary teams and networks,” concluded Cornelis van de Velde, President of ECCO.
