International fertility physicians comment on work at ESHRE conference, Istanbul‏

ESHRE has issued several press releases relating to work on lifestyle issues, being presented at the ESHRE conference in Istanbul.

1. Five or more cups of coffee a day reduce the chance of IVF success by around 50 per cent

2. A high intake of certain dietary fats associated with lower live birth rates, decreased oocyte number and poorer embryo quality in IVF

3. Why smoking is 'BAD' for the Fallopian tube -and increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy

Commenting, IFFS General Secretary, Richard Kennedy (Coventry, UK) said:

We know that many lifestyle activities can make it harder to conceive. This work reinforces the need for a good lifestyle for those trying to have a baby; eat and drink in moderation, and don’t smoke. We can of course add other factors, such as keeping to a good weight, and staying reasonably fit. This is true whether you are going through IVF, or trying for a baby naturally. This is something we all probably know; the healthier you are, the better your chance of having a baby.

These lifestyle differences really become noticeable when you make international comparisons on the way we live our lives and the consequences which these differences have. In many countries there are high smoking rates and high obesity rates. If you live an unhealthy lifestyle or in an unhealthy environment, then you are already one step behind if you are trying to conceive”.
