International Menopause Society supports World Osteoporosis Day

The Internatrional Menopause Society (IMS) is issuing the following comment in support of World Osteoporosis Day
Dr Tobie de Villiers (Cape Town, South Africa), President of the International Menopause Society, commented:
“The International Menopause Society fully supports the aims of World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a widespread condition, and both men and women need to be aware of the potentially serious effects which can result from osteoporotic fractures. They also need to be aware that sensible precautions can often avoid the risks of this condition. Prevention is better than cure, and so exercise, a good diet, and adequate levels of vitamin D will help safeguard bone and muscle health.
Working with the menopause, we see many women who are affected by, or at risk of developing osteoporosis. Because of this, the International Menopause Society (IMS) advises women to consult their doctor as they approach the menopause, to ensure that they can take greater control over the management of the changes which take place at this time of life. But both men and women need greater awareness of the condition, and the IMS is happy to work with the International Osteoporosis Foundation to promote measures to ensure healthy muscles and bones as people grow older”.
