Successful applicants are expected to be well-established scientists with more than 10 years of professional experience and multi-disciplined accomplishments. The deadline for applications is 15 November 2011.
Scientists can also apply to be a member of the Commission's database of experts, who contribute to the work of the Scientific Committees on an ad hoc basis on specific issues. In this case, there is no minimum professional experience required and no deadline for applications.

Scientific advice plays a fundamental role in EU policy-making. The European Commission adopts its decisions and proposals based on the best and most authoritative scientific advice available. The Commission presents scientists with the rare opportunity to usher science out of the laboratory and into policy-making. The EU Scientific Risk Assessment Advisory Structure on matters related to consumer safety, public health, and the environment is a place where cutting-edge science meets political and legislative power. This is the place where your scientific skills could influence millions of lives by providing advice which is then taken up in the drafting of new laws and regulations. This is the place where your science makes a difference to people's lives.
The opinions you will produce can make a significant impact on the overall scientific thinking in your area of expertise. The much-quoted opinions to which you will contribute reach an unusually diverse, worldwide audience of scientists, politicians, legislators, stakeholders, industrial and civil society. The multidisciplinary and highly interactive atmosphere that permeates the work of the Scientific Risk Assessment Advisory Structure paves the way towards a network of like-minded people, open discussions, and collaboration between scientists. This includes opportunities for dialogue with decision makers at the highest level. These stimulating working conditions often serve as an impetus for a generation of new policies and new scientific research ideas.
