Sad after sex? One third of women say they experience post-coital blues

Got a case of the bedroom blues?. In a small study involving 200 young women in Australia, one third admitted to experiencing immediate feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability or restlessness after sex, LiveScience reported. About 10% of women said they frequently or almost always feel sad after sex. One woman participating in the study said her feelings of sadness had nothing to do with her affection toward her partner, according to LiveScience.Under most circumstances, sexual activity arouses feelings of well-being and relaxation, study author Robert Schweitzer of the Queensland Institute of Technology said in a statement.

Schweitzer said the cause of post-coital sadness is unknown, though prior sexual abuse has been known to cause feelings of shame or guilt in women during later sexual activity. Still, Schweitzer said he found only moderate correlation between prior sexual abuse and post-sex blues later in life. He said other factors like emotional characteristics might be more to blame. Schweitzer said he believes the next step is to find out whether or not how a woman views herself may contribute to sadness in the bedroom. The study was published in the International Journal of Sexual Health. Researchers say more studies must be done to see if women in other age groups and locations report similar post-coital experiences.
