FDA warns of prenatal risk of oral clefts with topiramate

US regulators warned that new data suggests that pregnant women who take topiramate are at higher risk of giving birth to a child with oral clefts and said that the labels of the drug would be updated accordingly. Topiramate, which is used to treat epilepsy and prevent migraine, was originally developed by Johnson & Johnson and marketed under the brand name Topamax, but is also available generically.
