Lung Cancer Deaths Down with CT Scans

Research has shown that doctors who use CT scans on patients to diagnose lung cancer are able to save lives more often. The CT scan is able to pick up lung cancer far sooner than other testing methods which lead to increased survival rates.
The key to survival in lung cancer has always been early treatment. However, research has shown that most patients are diagnosed far too late for treatment to be successful. Therefore, new recommendations are helping to cut the death rate by nearly half.
Those who are at risk for lung cancer, former smokers, mine workers, etc, should undergo a CT Scan at least once a year to possibly detect lung cancer that could be growing in the lung tissue.
Using a CT scan has been proven as the method that will give the earliest possible detection time for the diagnosis. However, it is still an uncommon test ordered by the doctors and hospitals from around the world.
Most often the lack of usage is based on the price of the testing. CT scans can run into the thousands just for the test, not including the cost of the doctor that must read the information and offer the diagnosis.
With this new information available doctors are learning new skills. Despite the cost, hospitals are already planning to start offering CT scans for those that are at the highest risk levels for lung cancer.
The American Lung Association has announced plans to offer free CT scans at different events around the country.
