Half baked Brits ignore sun risks

NEARLY half of Brits got so sunburnt this summer that they risk the deadliest form of skin cancer. Around 46 per cent baked themselves at least once since May - to the extent they were still sore the following day. And a third of those said they had deliberately set out to get a tan. The most common place to burn was on the face, then the arms, shoulders and neck.

Getting frazzled trebles the risk of malignant melanoma, which can kill.
More than 10,300 cases are diagnosed in the UK every year and nearly 2,000 people die from it. But four in ten Brits quizzed for Cancer Research UK and Superdrug admitted they burn every year.
Martin Crisp, chief pharmacist at the high street chain, said: "People are setting out with the specific aim of getting sunburn because they see it as part of getting a tan.
"What they don't realise is there is more going on in the skin than you see on the surface. While the tan may fade, the damage does not. The more time people spend in the sun, the more damage they are doing.
"They should seriously ask themselves whether it's a risk they're prepared to take."
The charity's Ed Yong added: "People aren't taking these risks seriously enough."
