10th OLD VINE FESTIVAL, THE OLDEST VINE IN THE WORLD Maribor, Slovenia, 17th – 26th September 2010

In Maribor, the capital of Slovenia’s wine growing region of Štajerska, begins the 10th Old Vine Festival, a celebration of the oldest vine in the world. This top-class 10-day tourist culinary-wine-cultural festival, from 17th to 26th September, brings to the city centre a variety of events from the rich treasury of wine, cuisine and culture, with the 24th Festive Grape Harvest of the Old Vine as the highlight of the festival.
The starting point of all these activities is Slovenia’s unique tourist attraction, the Old Vine, which is over 400 years old and recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world. Making it even more interesting is the fact that the vine is growing in the middle of the old town core, on the embankment of the river Drava, on the façade of the Old Vine House, a Slovene temple of wine tradition and culture.
This biggest autumn tourist event in the Maribor–Pohorje Tourist Destination hosts over 500 participants. It brings opportunities for meeting connoisseurs and amateurs, for fun and learning, for adults and children, for body and soul. Programme: www.maribor-pohorje.si.
Maribor boasts the oldest vine in the world, as well as the honorary title of European Capital of Culture 2012 and Host of the Winter Universiade 2013. Famous for its attractive ancient town core, rich culture and superb art, attractive location in the middle of lush green nature of Pohorje and playful wine-growing hills, Maribor offers authentic adventure – from getting acquainted with the city from a traditional raft, with the river boat “Dravska vila”, the tourist train “Jurèek”, with a horse and carriage, by bike, with a tourist guide, with a bird’s eye view from the cable railway or the adrenaline park, with hiking boots … all accompanied by delicious wine and cuisine. And just a quiet word of advice: come and visit Maribor’s pearls before they are discovered by the mass!
